Probiotics and Children's Health: A Closer Look at the Research

In recent years, probiotics have gained significant attention for their cited benefits in improving digestive health and boosting immunity. For parents, understanding the impact of these "good bacteria" on children's health is crucial. Today, we’ll take a look at the latest research on the effects of probiotics on children.  Healthy Heights is here to help parents like you make informed decisions about incorporating them into your childrens’ diets.

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms, often referred to as "good" or "friendly" bacteria, which play a crucial role in aiding in digestion. The major impact of probiotics' appears to be their ability to balance our gut microbiota – the community of microorganisms living in our intestines.

Research on Probiotics and Children’s Health

  • Digestive Health: Several studies have indicated that probiotics can be beneficial in treating and preventing gastrointestinal issues in children, such as diarrhea, constipation, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
    • A study performed by researchers from the Department of Paediatrics, at the University of Naples evaluated five different probiotic preparations in children with acute diarrhea. The results showed that Lactobacillus GG and a mix of L. delbrueckii var bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, L. acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum significantly reduced the duration of diarrhea compared to oral rehydration alone. 1

  • Immune System Support: Studies suggest that probiotics may enhance our body’s immune response.
    • Researchers from the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Ferrara have noted "The beneficial properties of consumed probiotics on host immune system improvement have been demonstrated in the treatment of several conditions and diseases, including allergies, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infections, and infant colic..." 2

  • Allergy prevention: Probiotics might play a role in managing allergies.
    • A study from the University of Santiago showed that probiotic “administration can reduce the morbidity and the duration of allergy symptoms. “  3

Safety and Considerations:

While probiotics are generally considered safe for most children, it's essential to consult a pediatrician before starting any supplement, especially for children with underlying health conditions or those taking other medications. The effectiveness of probiotics can vary based on the strain and dosage, so professional guidance is important.

Where to start?

The growing body of research on probiotics and children's health is promising, suggesting these supplements can be a valuable addition to a child's diet. However, as with any health-related decision, it's crucial to approach probiotics with care and consult healthcare professionals to ensure they are suitable and safe for your child.

Some great sources of these probiotics are yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh, kimchi, miso, kombucha, pickles, semi hard cheeses, and raw milk.  However, very few children enjoy eating those foods!
