Protein is one of the macronutrients that your child has to consume in order to grow and develop. Sometimes ensuring your child gets enough protein might be difficult due to their activity level, picky eating, vegetarian diet, etc. In these moments you may start to wonder about supplements for your child, but how do you even begin to choose. Is protein powder for kids even a thing? And what’s the difference between adult and kids protein? All good questions, answered here today.

Kids Protein Shake

Protein powder may be something you decide to try out with your child. Then comes the question of what protein powder to buy! You are familiar with adult protein powder but what’s the difference between the protein powders you buy for yourself versus shake mix made for kids?⁣

Serving Size

Most adult protein powder serving sizes are too much for a young child. Kids require about 1-1.5 grams of protein for every 2 lbs of weight. This may be lower or higher depending on their activity level, we recommend consulting with a Registered Dietician specifically if this is a question!

A popular adult whey protein powder has 24g of protein which would likely cover all the protein needs for a child’s daily intake - in young children this is actually too much! This is not ideal and we want to be sure that you kid isn’t consuming TOO much protein on a regular basis. The ideal protein powder for children has a manageable amount of protein meaning that other food is still consumed throughout the day. Kids should focus on food first, and protein powder for supplementing their normal diet when needed or as directed by their doctor for a medical concern.

Healthy Height is a great choice for kids as each serving has 12 grams of protein in just a 4oz. serving format. This is easily finished by young kids and allows kids to still work on their eating.

Unnecessary Ingredients

Some adult protein powders have additional supplements that children don’t need to be consuming. For example, some adult protein powders have artificial sweeteners, unnecessary fibers and gums, added color, caffeine, etc. It’s best to choose a kid’s protein powder with a short ingredient list and the ingredients be GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the FDA.

Healthy Height is made for kids, specifically for kids that are struggling to grow. Our founders wanted to create a formula that was both safe and effective for children to consume AND would help them grow. The doctors creating the formula created the correct ratio of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fat) to micronutrients (like vitamins and minerals) to help kids grow. Healthy Height shake mix formula is clinically studied and contains only GRAS ingredients.

Additionally, many adult protein powders come in chocolate and vanilla but can also come in funky flavors like Fruity Cereal, Cotton Candy, Mint Ice Cream, etc. While these may be technically safe for your child to consume, it’s important that children don’t get used to super sweet flavors and reject the healthy, whole foods you prepare on a regular basis.

Healthy Height comes in Vanilla, Chocolate, and Plain with only 3 grams of added sugar in Chocolate and Vanilla and 0 grams of added sugar in Plain. The low added sugar helps kids in rounding out their diet, making sure they’re getting all the vitamins and minerals they need to grow and at the same time, allows them to learn and enjoy new whole foods.
